When most people talk about 'framing', they imagine a picture, behind glass, with a frame around the outside. With canvas paintings / prints, you are able to take a wooden frame and stretch the canvas very tightly around the frame and have it stapled at the back. It then hangs on the wall just like that. No glass, no reflections and because there's no traditional frame, you don't have to worry whether the frame style / colour fits in with your decor.
A stretcher frame is basically 4 stretcher bars put together. We use beveled stretcher bars instead of square bars. Square bars touch the canvas along the width of the bar and create a visible impression in the canvas over time. The bars slot them together to form the frame.
Our stretched canvases come with 3.2cm thick stretcher bars which are either Victorian Ash hardwood, or American Oak hardwood. Both these woods are kiln-dried to ensure they do not leach tannins (tannic acid). They have a bevelled edge to protect the canvas that rests on it. Both are the same weight.
The type of wood we use depends on a few factors such as how large the canvas is and wood availabilty.
